Small Things to Do in Jaisalmer Between the Big Sights

The quick, cheap, local moments that make a trip stick.

Every plan I see for Jaisalmer is built around the big sights: the Fort, the havelis, the dunes. And they're all worth it. But the trips people remember are usually the ones that weren't on the list at all. The kachori eaten standing up. The lane nobody mentioned. The view from a wall you stumbled onto. So here are the small things to do in Jaisalmer that I send my own guests to, in the spare hours between the headline stuff.

Kachori at Fateh Ki Kachori

The kachori here is crisp, hot and unapologetically spicy, and it gets eaten on the spot, wrapped in a scrap of paper. It is not a sit-down thing. Go in the morning, order one, and you will understand why people argue about which shop makes the best one. Fateh's is the answer I give.

Ghotua from Dhanraj Shop

Ghotua is the sweet you will not find in the guidebooks: thick, dark, made with desi ghee, and completely addictive. Dhanraj Shop is where I send people. It closes early, so grab it before the evening rush, and carry it with you like a stash.

What to explore inside the Fort

The Fort itself is not one attraction, it is a whole neighbourhood up on the hill, and there is a lot inside its walls. You can easily spend half a day up there and not see it all.

Start with the Fort itself: the ramparts, the havelis and the lanes that make it one of the few forts in India where people still live. Then the Raja Rani Mahal Museum, with the royal artefacts and portraits. The Baa Ri Haveli Museum sits nearby, a restored haveli inside the fort walls with its original furniture and paintings.

The Jain Temples are a must: marble carvings so fine they look like lace, and a calm that stops you in your tracks. Then wander the Fort Galiya, the narrow lanes, and let daily life happen around you: kids running between doorways, women buying vegetables, a carpenter planing a door frame.

Finish at the Cannon Spot. From the cannon emplacement you get the best free view of the whole city, the lake and the desert beyond. Go in late afternoon, when the sunlight turns the sandstone gold.

Wander the market, buy nothing

Sadar Bazaar and the Fort market are excellent even if you don't buy a thing. Browse the embroidered fabrics, the silver, the wooden toys. Chat with the shopkeepers. The point is the browsing, not the purchase, and if something genuinely grabs you, the haggling is part of the fun.

The big sights are why you come to Jaisalmer. These small things are why you'll want to come back.
