Is Jaisalmer Safe?

The honest answer comes from someone who lives here and sends guests home happy every week.

First, the answer everyone wants: yes, Jaisalmer is safe. It's one of the safest cities in Rajasthan for tourists, and that includes solo travellers and women. Violent crime against visitors is rare, and the city is small enough that word travels fast; nobody here wants a bad name.

But 'safe' doesn't mean 'nothing to think about.' The risks in Jaisalmer are the same ones you'd find in any tourist town: touts, overcharging, and the odd moment of carelessness. Here's the honest breakdown.

The everyday stuff

Walking around the Fort, the markets, and the lake at normal hours is perfectly fine. Locals are used to tourists and most are genuinely friendly. If you're out late, the main bazaar and Fort area still have people around. Use the same street sense you'd use in any new city and you'll be fine.

Solo travellers

Jaisalmer is genuinely popular with solo backpackers, and most guesthouses are used to hosting them. A few practical notes: stay somewhere with a reception that's staffed, share your rough plan with someone back home, and if you're doing a desert camp night, book through a registered camp, not through a random tout. Solo travellers get targeted by touts more than anyone, so the 'nobody approaches you first' rule matters double.

Emergencies

Dial 112 for police, 108 for an ambulance, and 101 for fire. The closest good hospital is the government district hospital in Jaisalmer, and your guesthouse manager will know the nearest reliable clinic. For anything small, ask your accommodation first; they can usually sort it faster than any app.

The one thing I'd actually warn about

Roads. Rajasthan's highways are busy with trucks, camels, and the occasional cow at all hours. If you're hiring a driver, that's fine; they know the roads. If you're driving yourself, keep it for daylight, expect animals on the road, and don't try to beat the sunset back through the desert. The most dangerous part of a Jaisalmer trip is usually the drive, not the city.

Bottom line: Jaisalmer is a safe, welcoming place. Come with normal street sense, a little sunscreen, and this list in your back pocket, and you'll have nothing to worry about except how many photos to take.
