How to Plan a Jaisalmer Trip
Build your own itinerary with real drive times, real prices, and routes that make sense.
Most people plan a Jaisalmer trip backwards. They write down every attraction they have heard of, then try to fit it all in whatever order looks nice on paper. The result is a day spent criss-crossing the city, or an afternoon lost because the dunes were actually two hours away, not twenty minutes. I have watched it happen hundreds of times from my office in Indira Colony. So I am going to show you the way we plan trips for our own guests, and the free tool on this site that does it for you.
Why route order matters more than the list
Jaisalmer's sights are not scattered evenly around the map. They sit in three natural groups. The city circuit: the Fort, both havelis, Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh, which is barely two kilometres from the centre. Then the desert loop southwest of town: Kuldhara village and then Sam Sand Dunes down the same road, which is why a good plan does Kuldhara and Sam in one outbound run instead of coming back to the city in between. And then the border day: Tanot Mata and Longewala, about 120 kilometres northeast, which is a full day on its own because of the drive and the permit checkpoint.
Sam itself is 60 to 90 minutes from the city. Khuri is a different set of dunes, similar experience, about two hours out. If you treat them as one thing you will get your afternoon wrong. This is the kind of detail a generic itinerary from the internet will not give you.
What a good plan needs: real numbers
A plan built on guesses is not a plan, it is a wish list. So here are the real figures we work with, the same ones that go into our Plan Maker. The Fort is free to walk around, with the museum sections costing around ₹100 to ₹300 per person. Patwon and Salim Singh havelis take about an hour each and cost roughly ₹100 to ₹250. Gadisar boating is ₹300 to ₹400 per person, paid at the counter. Kuldhara is an hour, around ₹100 to ₹250 entry. Sam Sand Dunes at sunset with a camel ride starts around ₹800, a jeep safari from ₹900, a camp stay from ₹1,800, a dune bonfire dinner from ₹3,499 per couple, and the cultural night is ₹999 per person. A Tanot and Longewala car trip with your permit arranged runs from about ₹3,500.
Meet the Plan Maker
We built a free tool on this site called the Plan Maker. You pick how many days you have, choose what kind of trip you like: history, desert, culture, a night under the stars, and then tap the places that interest you. Every card shows the real visit time and price. Hit generate and it lays out a day-by-day itinerary with clock times, the drive between each stop, and a small route map. It will tell you honestly when a day is too packed, and it will never suggest bouncing back to the city between Kuldhara and Sam. When you are happy, you can send the whole plan to us on WhatsApp in one tap.
The logic inside it is the logic we use when you call us. A border trip is never your first day. Bonfires and cultural nights only appear on days you are actually at Sam. Everything you could reasonably see in Jaisalmer fits into three days, and the tool proves it by fitting it.
The ideal three-day plan when you want everything
Day one is the city circuit: Fort in the morning, Patwon and Salim Singh after, Gadisar towards evening, Bada Bagh last, it is close enough to count as part of town. Day two is the desert loop: Kuldhara, then Sam for the sunset, a jeep safari, a camel ride, dinner by the bonfire and the cultural night, with a camp stay under the stars. Day three you come back through Kuldhara if you skipped it, or take the border option: Tanot, Longewala, then Sam for the sunset on the way home, and back in Jaisalmer by night. All of it, in three days, without a single wasted drive.
How this helps you book
The plan is free because the plan is the easy part. The hard part is the doing: a licensed driver who knows the dune roads, a camp that actually has hot water, a border permit filed properly. That is our job. Bring us the plan you built, or let us build one for you, and we will confirm availability and lock the real schedule in a WhatsApp conversation. No payment until you are sure.
