Booking Smart in Jaisalmer
The guide I wish every visitor read before booking anything.
Most 'cheated' stories in Jaisalmer aren't scams; they're just unfair deals. You pay ₹2,000 for a safari that costs ₹1,200, or you book a 'luxury camp' that turns out to be a tent and a mattress. None of it is dangerous. All of it is avoidable. Here's how.
Stay away from the lapkas
The lapkas are the men who latch onto you the moment you step off the train or the bus, usually on scooters. They'll offer a 'free' ride to your hotel, chat warmly the whole way, and then expect payment for it, or they drop you at a shop or a camp where they collect a commission from whatever you buy. They're persistent, and brushing them off can feel rude, but a firm 'no' and walking on is the only language they respect. Anyone who genuinely works in tourism here will never chase you down the street.
Check the reviews, and check the real ones
Look at recent reviews on Google Maps and booking sites, and read what people actually say. Watch for the classic pattern: dozens of 5-star reviews all written in the same week, all oddly similar, mentioning the same phrases. A camp that's been running for years will have a mix: some 5s, some 4s, maybe a grumpy 3. That's real.
Border trips need permits; book through someone licensed
Trips to Tanot Mata and Longewala, near the Pakistan border, need a permit. Only authorised operators can arrange it. If someone quotes you a suspiciously cheap 'border trip' without mentioning a permit, they're either planning to skip it (which means you'll be turned back at the checkpoint) or they don't know what they're doing. Ask directly: 'Do you arrange the border permit?' A legit operator says yes immediately.
The 'too good to be true' test
Jaisalmer is genuinely affordable. But if someone quotes you a full desert camp with dinner, safari, and pickup for a price that's half of every other camp you've seen, they're not generous; something's cut. Cheap is fine. Half-price is a story.
Use your gut, and use the right channels
Book through a registered travel office with a physical presence, or through your guesthouse, not through the man who waves you down from a scooter. And if a deal happens to be with us, even better: we'll gladly write out exactly what's included before you pay a rupee.
